Hiking Backpacks

I’m going to Yosemite National Park in Yosemite at the end of this month, but I’ve never been camping before. Anyone have some recommendations for a tough backpack that I could use to carry things like water, a tent, and supplies?

I am 5′9” and 130 lbs. What size (in liters or otherwise) backpack should I be using?

Hey I just got one of those really nice marine hiking backpacks it’s like 5500cu inches and has all the nice bells and whistles etc etc. but also I know that it has a place to put a water reservoir "camel pouch" except that it does not come with a water reservoir or the hose for it. I do not want to buy an entire camel pack for the backpack but just the reservoir and hose. Does anyone know where I can purchase this online?

I have a 5 month old German Shepherd/ Australian Shepherd mix and I was wondering how old she needs to be to:
1. Wear an empty hiking pack around the house
2. Go on a hike with her empty pack
3. Carry weight on her hike

I just came back from yosemite and the 8 mile hike I took felt really good, so much so that I want to make a hobby out of it. Does anyone know of a good book to help introduce me to hiking and backpacking?

I have been working out for the past three months. I am not at the fittness level I’d like to be just yet and I’ve been on as much as 8 mi. day hikes. I guess what I’m asking is how many miles should I go in a day w/backpack gear for an overnight. I usually go on marked trails but I live an hour and a half from the creeper trail in Damascus, VA. and I’m hoping to do some of it soon. Thanks.

By best, I meant things like user friendly, load capacity, wheel durability, designs that make it easy to pull along, etc.

I have a field pack large internal frame spo100 pack that i got from the army navy store. i was packing it and noticed two random straps on both sides of the shoulder rest. i usually put my tent inside the part that covers your gear and strap that down but putting it near those straps seems like it would work better.anyone know what thonse straps are used for?

I don’t want the typical run. I am looking for a race that takes you through the wilderness where true strategy comes into play. For example, you might have to decide when to set up camp for the night or press forward to make better time. Does such a race exist? If so, can I do it solo or do you need to have a team? Am a required to take a safety course or other training to participate? Thank you!! ( I have seen adventure racing but I am more interested in just hiking)

I want to take my girlfriend on a good hike and camp out in the wilderness. I would preferably like a spot near water or a stream of some sort. All of my hikes i like i think are a little too much for a beginner hiker. I live in Victorville to give you an idea of where i live. Right on the 15 freeway. Any ideas?

I am looking at a gregory triconi, arc’teryx bora 80, or the gregory whitney. All seem to feel good. Which one out of all three if going up to 5 days at a time?

Hi, I’m going backpacking for 6 months(ish) around Europe, North Africa and the Middle East – carrying a relatively heavy load & I was wondering whether anybody has any suggestions as to what boot I should use?

Im currently looking at the Scarpa Ranger and the Meindl Vermont – both seem really good, and its become a stalemate situation.

I’m a 23 year old male who enjoys hiking backpacking and traveling, I want to meet women who are into the same things I am. Where do I go to meet them? Because honestly the bar scene is getting old fast and its tough to meet people on the trail.

i dont want to go and two of my least favorite parts about scouts is hiking and backpacking. is philmont fun at all? and is it worth going?

i have recently got into the shooting sports and am an avid hiker and i wanted to know if it is legal to carry a non restricted rifle in say a backpack of other bag while hiking. namely i was thinking the henry US survival rifle would be the best choice simply for its small size when folded up. as far as i can tell i think it would be legal but i’m not 100%.

My dog lowers her body, tucks her tail, and slinks off away from me whenever I try to put on a harness or a hiking backpack. Im not sure why, it just started recently after her wearing them for awhile. Shes never liked wearing them, but I ignored it and just went on putting it on. Im assuming this created the bad experiance and caused it to progress.
Ive tried taking a food loure and having her willingly stick her head through it, and slipping it on.
It reminds me of trying to tame a feral dog because she’ll start to chew at the food but then the second it touches over her ears she backs away and goes somewhere else.
I use harnesses/backpacks for when I take her for walks later at night, because they have reflective surfaces on them.
Should I keep doing what im doing, letting her willingly put her head through it and build a positive assosiation, or what?

I tend to just throw it on her when im in a hurry, and as I said she didnt like it to begin with. So it got progressivly worse over time because I was ignoring the signals she was giving me.
Ive been giving her a treat for putting it on, and giving her a treat for taking it off. Sometimes ill try to leave the harness just on for a few hours so shes use to it. The backpack is kinda bulky so i dont want her running around the house with that on .. she seems more afraid of the backpack because its so big.

My friends and I are planning to go on a little hiking trip later this summer. The trail is approximately 60 Kilometres and we intend on doing about 20 Kilometres per day on a 3 days’ hike. I’m looking to buy a good hiking backpack along with a sleeping bag. I’m not too familiar with the brands relevant to this type of equipment. All I know is that it won’t be cheap… but that’s not really an issue. I would rather pay good money for a quality product that will last me a good stretch.

I’m not exactly sure on the size of the backpack needed… but I was thinking of going with 50-65 L. In regards to the sleeping bag, I’m not sure exactly how to choose with the temperatures. I know it’ll be hot… I would say probably around 12-15 degrees Celsius overnight. I’m guessing a 3-season would suffice.

I’m a pretty athletic guy; 5"9, 150 lbs. We have been training for this… and we’ve hike about 11 Kilometres of the trail in about 4 hours… that’s including a break for lunch and occasional stops here and there. I digress…

Anyways, if anyone has experience with brands and thoughts on which products are better overall, please let me know. Also, I wouldn’t want to pay over 0 for a backpack… I was looking at around 0-250. As for the sleeping bag, I’d be ready to pay about 0… preferably less.

In the Pennsylvania (Philadelphia to be exact – But I don’t mind driving) area.

Looking to do a good 2 or 3 day backpacking trip in the area, where is a good website that has a list of trail heads, or other information, or even simply personal experience of great places to hike and backpack in the Pennsylvania area? Looking for moderately difficult trials, but nothing extreme. Thank you!

i don’t like all that weight and extra pressure on my already bad back so is it possible to stuff everything (water bottles, phones, gps, etc) in a duty belt? where can i get one of those?
